History of the 2022 Half Dollar

The 2022 Half Dollar is a Kennedy Half Dollar. When it was first coined in 1964, it was a memorial to honor JFK, one of the most popular US Presidents. He had been assassinated a month earlier and the public was eager for a keepsake. Those first coins were 90% Silver and 10% Copper. This plus JFK’s acclaim meant the coins disappeared as soon as they came out.

In contrast, the 2022 Half Dollar circulated freely and was widely used.  However, since Half Dollars don’t get much use in everyday transactions, the mint halted production in August 2022. They shifted their focus to nickels, dimes, and quarters. That said, the San Francisco Mint continued to make proof coins for collectors. The proof coins are made of fine silver.

As for circulating 2022 Half Dollars, they have a core of 91.67% Copper coated with 8.33% Silver. This is the total metal content, and it’s distributed through a pure copper core plated with 75% copper and 25% nickel. The content of this coin has changed a lot over the years. During the silver shortage of the 1960s, the coin shifted to 40% silver and 60% Copper.

Commemorative 2022 Half Dollars

The US Mint made two other Half Dollars in 2022. First, the Negro Leagues Baseball Half Dollar, a commemorative coin that quickly sold out. Second, the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor Half Dollar. Both of these commemorative proof coins were made with the same metal mix as circulating Half Dollars, but they were struck on burnished blanks using proof dies.

The Negro Leagues Half Dollars were coined to celebrate the Negro Baseball Leagues. Black players were banned from playing with white baseballers so they created their own parallel league. But while they had lots of fans, they weren’t allowed to stay in hotels or eat in restaurants so their tour bus became an important point of safety, comfort, and survival for these athletes.

The Negro National League began in 1922 so the 2022 coins mark its 100th Anniversary. Meanwhile, a Purple Heart Medal is awarded to soldiers hurt or maimed in battle and the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor Half Dollar commemorates these veterans. Both coins have a $5 surcharge donated to the organizers/museums in charge of their respective causes.

A strike-through error is when a foreign object like a piece of cloth, a metal shard, some tape, or even a staple slips between the blank and die during striking. The object might get stuck onto the coin or it may slip off and leave traces of its presence. This coin got struck thru and was graded as an MS 66 by NGC. Doubling errors can occur at two stages. When it’s the die that moves between hub strikes, it’s called a doubled-die. But when it’s the planchet that shifted between die strikes, then it’s mechanical doubling. Unless you get your coin certified, you can’t be sure which is which. In this sample, the seller believes it’s a doubled-die reverse that echoes the eagle’s tail feathers.
