History of the 2024 Silver Dollar Value

The American Silver Eagle bullion coin originated from legislative debates in the 1970s and 80s on the most strategic option to sell stockpiles of silver.

A section of legislators argued that the production of silver in the United States was much more than the country needed so selling the precious metal would be helpful.

A bill introduced in 1982 by Senator McClure was among the earliest proposals to sell silver from the national stockpile through the production of silver coins. Such a sale, the bill proposed, would alleviate the pressure on silver prices, which had been depressed for a while due to overproduction.

McClure’s original bill was never enacted but in 1985 the Senate agreed to the bill after an amendment. A few days later President Reagan approved the bill, signing it into law in July 1985. The resulting legislation was known as the Liberty Coin Act, which authorized the American Silver Eagle bullion program.

The Act authorized the Mint to use the silver from the Defense National Stockpile. The program’s goal was to deplete the stockpile gradually over the years, and by 2002 the stockpile came close to depletion.

In 2002 Senator Harry Reid introduced a bill titled Support of American Eagle Silver Bullion Program Act to support the program’s continuation in the face of the depleting silver stockpile. The Senate and House passed the bill on June 21 and 27 respectively and it was subsequently signed into law.

After years of legislative back and forth, the San Francisco Mint struck the first American Silver Eagle coin in October 1986.

The obverse of the 2023 Silver Eagle dollar features the iconic Walking Liberty, originally designed by Adolph A. Weinman. The image was initially used from 1916 to 1947 on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar.

Given the image’s popularity, it was a favorite pick for the American Silver Eagle program. Aside from the elegant Walking Liberty, the obverse also features an image of the sun on the bottom left.

The inscriptions IN GOD WE TRUST appear on the right under which you will notice the initials AW for Adolph Weinman. The inclusion of the initials was part of a design improvement done in 2021.

The word LIBERTY is arched boldly along the coin’s inner rim, occupying three quarters of the rim.

Reverse of the 2024 Silver Dollar

John Mercanti’s reverse design remained on the Silver Eagle dollar from 1986 to 2021. The initial design showed a heraldic eagle with the Union Shield on the forefront.

The bird is holding an olive branch in one of its talons and arrows in the other talon, much like the Great Seal of the United States. The initial design also showed thirteen tiny stars above the eagle’s head, representing the thirteen colonies

The reverse design changed in 2021 to portray Emily Damstra’s landing eagle, which was inspired by the design on the 1971 Eisenhower dollar coin.

In addition to the eagle, the reverse shows the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arched on the left side along the coin’s rim.

Also prominent are the inscriptions ONE DOLLAR, 1 OZ FINE SILVER arched on the right side along the rim. The motto E PLURIBUS UNUM and the mint mark also appear on the right side surface close to the bird.

2024 Silver Dollar Value Guides

Although Silver Eagle dollars are legal tender, collectors and investors trade these coins on the value of their silver content and mintage.

The U.S. Mint produces three types of American Silver Eagle coins to meet the needs of collectors and investors. The three include:

Brilliant Uncirculated: These silver coins, intended for investors do not have mint marks. As the name suggests, these coins have never been circulated among the public. Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) Silver Eagle dollars spot a frosted satin finish and are the most common and accessible type of American Silver Eagles.

Proof: Made for collectors, American Silver Eagles are minted using a unique process, resulting in extra shiny silver coins. These coins are minted at the West Point facility and bear the mint mark W on the reverse.

Special Occasion Silver Eagles: Some Silver Eagles have been produced for commemorative purposes. Examples include the Philadelphia Set of 1993, the United States Millennium Coinage and Currency Set of 2000, and the American Eagle 25th Anniversary Silver Coin Set of 2011 among others.

Because the Silver Eagles do not have mint marks, comparing their value can be challenging. You would need to know the coin’s history to determine its origin and value.

From 1986 to 2000, Brilliant Uncirculated Silver Eagles were produced at the Philadelphia facility. Between 1999 and 2000, the West Point facility also produced Bullion Uncirculated Eagles. Since 2001 the West Point facility has manufactured Bullion Uncirculated Silver Eagles.

The story is a bit different with Proof Silver Eagles. These coins have always bore a mint mark depending on the location where they were minted.

For example, Silver Eagles minted from 1986 to 1992 were produced in San Francisco and bear a mint mark S. Those struck from 1993 to 2000 have a P mint mark to show their Philly origins.

Starting in 2001, proof Silver Eagles have been minted in West Point and have the W mint mark on the reverse.
