2023 Silver Dollar Coin Value (with Errors List)

Silver Dollar coins rarely make it into circulation. Even in the earliest days of minting, back in the 1790s, people found them too bulky for everyday use.

And once Silver Certificates were introduced, they became entrenched and later evolved into $1 Bills. But in 2023, the US Mint coined three versions of this commemorative coin. Let’s verify the 2023 Silver Dollar Value.

2023 Silver Dollar Price Tables

As we mentioned, the US Mint produced three types of 2023 Silver Dollars:

• The 2023 Silver Morgan Dollar
• The 2023 Silver Peace Dollar
• The 2023 Silver American Eagle Dollar

These commemorative Silver Dollars were minted in uncirculated, proof, and reverse-proof strikes and sold directly to collectors. The issue price for the 2023 Silver American Eagle $1 was $76 while the other two were offered at $80 each. The table below shows sample prices of these coins in the secondary market. History of the 2023 Silver Dollar

When the USA was first established, we mostly used foreign coins like the Spanish Silver Dollar. We also used currency from France and other European nations, as well as colonial coins from the UK. Spanish Silver Dollars were favored because they were designed to be physically sliced into eight wedges called bits. Two Bits (of Eight) were equivalent to 25c.

We began minting American $1 coins in 1794. These early coins were 89% Silver and 11% Copper. Today, $1 Silver coins are 99.99% Silver and 0.01% Copper. They’re mainly sold to collectors or used as bullion, a convenient way to trade in precious metals. The American Eagle is a coin with a face value of $1 and it contains 1 Troy Ounce of fine silver i.e. 99.9%.

Due to its silver content, its melt value is worth way more than a dollar. It changes based on the spot price of silver on the open market. In comparison, the 2023 Silver Peace Dollar and the 2023 Silver Morgan Dollar only have 0.0858 Troy Ounces of fine silver. They’re also slightly smaller than American Eagles, measuring 38.1mm across (1.5”) to the Eagle’s 40.6mm (1.6”).

History of the 2023 Silver Morgan Dollar

The Silver Morgan Dollar got its name from its designer, George T. Morgan. He was shipped in from the UK specifically to work on its design, and his tenure was only meant to last six months. But his boss was quite happy with his work and he eventually became the 7^th Chief Engraver of the US Mint. The Morgan Silver Dollar was meant for circulation within the US.

It was coined from 1878 to 1904, reintroduced in 1921 as a commemorative coin, and came back in 2021 to mark its 100^th anniversary. Today, it’s still being minted for collectors. It was initially 90% Silver and 10% Copper but is now 99.99% Silver. Morgan used Anna Willess Williams as his model for Miss Liberty. She preferred to stay anonymous but was later outed.

History of the 2023 Silver Peace Dollar

The Silver Peace Dollar was first coined in 1921 and discontinued in 1935. This Silver Dollar was reintroduced in 2021 as a commemorative peace and is still minted to date. Its designer was Anthony de Francisci. At 34, he was the youngest contest in a competition to design a World War I Memorial coin. He used his wife Teresa as his model to sculpt Lady Liberty.

Previous $1 coins were designed in-house by the Chief Mint Engraver. But De Francisci was not the first outsourced artist. This practice began with Augustus Saint Gaudens back in 1909. And although the Peace Dollar was minted for a decade or so, it only circulated from 1921 to 1928 and 1934 to 1935. Contemporary Peace Dollars mostly live inside display cases.

History of the 2023 Silver American Eagle Dollar

The Silver American Eagle Dollar showed up in 1986. It mimics Bullion American Eagle $1 coins, but bullion has no mint mark and is sold by dealers. In contrast, Uncirculated Silver Eagles have mint marks and you can buy them at the mint. Both coins were modeled off the Walking Liberty Half Dollar designed by Adolph Weinman in 1916 with a different tails side.

The 2023 Silver American Eagle $1 uses the same back design as the 2021 and 2022 coin while the Silver Eagles from 1986 to 2020 had the US Seal on the back. The new tails design is a modified version of Weinman’s original, showing a flying eagle with an olive branch. The coins were minted in uncirculated, proof, and reverse-proof strikes and aimed at collectors.

Features of the 2023 Silver Dollar

We’re going to describe the features of three 2023 Silver Dollars, so let’s start with the technical terms. The front or heads side of a coin is called its obverse while the back or tails side is the reverse. The thin side is the edge, often with a raised border called a rim or collar and ridges called reeds. The images on a coin are its devices and the background is the field.

The Obverse of the 2023 Silver Morgan Dollar

It shows Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian Cap and a headband that says Liberty. Two ears of wheat, two cotton flowers, and four cotton leaves stick out of her cap. The cotton leaves are often mistaken for maple leaves, which look similar. E Pluribus Unum is at the top of the $1. The date is at the bottom with 13 stars between. The M on her neckline is for George Morgan.

The Reverse of the 2023 Silver Morgan Dollar

It shows an eagle with its wings outstretched. The bird carries three arrows and an olive branch. A laurel wreath curved beneath its talons. The ribbon that ties the wreath has an M for Morgan on its left loop. The top third of the coin says United States of America, with In God We Trust between the wings. One Dollar is at the bottom with the mint mark between the D and the O.

Other Features of the 2023 Silver Morgan Dollar

Like the Peace Dollar, the 2023 Morgan Dollar is 38.1mm across (1.5”) and 2.4mm thick (0.09”). It has the same size, structure, dimensions, and silver content as the Peace Dollar, with 99.99% fine silver and a reeded edge. It’s the only coin with the designer’s initial on the front and back, though they’re quite subtle and hard to spot unless you know where to look.

It shows Lady Liberty wearing a radiant crown of light. The legend Liberty is above her head, with the I, B, E, and T partially hidden in her tiara. The motto In God We sits in front of her neck while Trust follows behind it. Under her neck, a stylized AF is engraved to identify the coin designer, Antonio de Francisci. The mint date, 2023, sits at the bottom of the $1 coin.

The Reverse of the 2023 Silver Peace Dollar

It shows an eagle perched on a rock, facing the radiant sunlight that surrounds it. The eagle is holding an olive branch. The bottom of the coin says Peace while the top has the legend United States of America, followed by the motto E Pluribus Unum. The denomination, One Dollar, sits on either side of the eagle. The mint mark is next to the eagle’s tail, under One.

Other Features of the 2023 Silver Peace Dollar

This coin is 99.99% Silver with the balance being copper. It has a reeded edge, is 38.1mm in diameter (1.5″), and is 2.4mm thick (0.09″). The 2023 Silver Peace Dollar contains 0.859 Troy Ounces of fine silver. When it was first minted in 1921, it replaced the Morgan Dollar and was created as a symbolic marker of newly found peace between Germany and the USA.

The Obverse of the 2023 Silver American Eagle Dollar

It echoes the Walking Liberty Half Dollar by Adolph Weinman, so it shows Lady Liberty walking towards the sun with her arm outstretched. The flag billows behind her and she holds laurel and oak branches. Liberty curls around her, with In God We Trust and the designer’s initials, AW, above her rear foot. The mint date is on the ground beneath her.

The Reverse of the 2023 Silver American Eagle Dollar

It shows an eagle flying with an olive branch clutched in its talons. The bird is flanked by the initials ESD for designer Emily S. Damstra and MG for sculptor Michael Gaudioso. The mint mark is above the eagle’s tail. In front of the eagle, it says United States of America. Behind the bird is One Dollar and 1 OZ Fine Silver, with E Pluribus Unum beside the metal specs.

Other Features of the 2023 Silver American Eagle Dollar

As we noted earlier, the 2023 Silver American Eagle is larger than its fellow Silver Dollars. It’s 40.6mm in diameter (1.6”) and is 2.98mm thick (0.1”). It has 1 Troy Ounce of 99.99% fine silver and weighs 31.1g. It has a reeded edge and the only difference between a bullion Silver Eagle and a collector’s Silver Eagle is the mint mark and the source (dealers vs mint).

The value of the 2023 Silver Dollar depends on its strike, mint mark, mint volume, and sale date. All the coins are 99.99% fine silver but Silver Eagles have a slightly higher melt value because they have a little more silver in them (0.859 Troy Ounces vs 1 Troy Ounce). 2023 Silver Morgan Dollar Value Guide

In 2023, the US Mint made Silver Morgan Dollars in Philadelphia and San Francisco. The Philadelphia Silver Morgan Dollars had no mint marks and were struck as Uncirculated $1 coins. This means the blanks were polished in drums full of 6mm stainless steel balls but the coins were struck using regular or business strike dies so they had an even, satin-like surface.

The Philadelphia Mint made 273,676 of these coins and the average price for an MS 65 is $177. An Uncirculated 2023 Morgan Dollar graded MS 70 sold for $186 on eBay. PCGS has graded over 17,000 Philadelphia coins as MS 70 so their value in April 2024 is $125. The mint also made 358,890 Proof Coins in the San Francisco branch with the S Mint Mark.

Proof coins are made on burnished blanks and are struck with special proof dies to produce a mirror-like field and a frosted device. San Francisco Mint also made 248,138 Reverse-Proof coins. They’re made on polished planchets just like proof coins, but they use reverse-proof dies so their order is reversed, with a mirror-like device and a frosted field. A pair is $330.

2023 Silver Peace Dollar Value Guide

Just like Morgan Dollars, the US Mint made 2023 Silver Peace Dollars in uncirculated, proof, and reverse-proof strikes. The 272,419 Uncirculated 2023 Silver Peace Dollars came from Philadelphia and therefore had no mint marks. The average MS 65 costs $177. But the 327,680 Proof Peace Dollars had the S Mint Mark, and so did the 248,138 Reverse Proofs.

2023 Silver American Eagle Dollar Value Guide

With 2023 Silver American Eagles, the 24,750,000 bullion coins were made at West Point and have no mint marks. But they also made 160,865 Burnished Uncirculated coins with the W Mint Mark for West Point. And they produced 231,040 Proof Coins in San Francisco with the S Mint Mark as well as 560,403 West Point Silver Eagle Proofs with the W Mint Mark.

On the Silver Eagle Dollar, one of the reeds was removed as a security feature. Its position shifted in 2021 and 2022. In 2023, the missing reed ended up at the 3 o’clock position. Also, from 2021, AW for Weinman was placed on the $1 Silver coin. A Silver Eagle bullion coin was $657 in 2023 while a PR 70 West Point DCAM was $313 and a San Francisco was $156.

2023 Silver Dollar Grading

2023 was barely a year ago so most of the 2023 Silver Dollars on the market are still pristine. Besides, they were all commemorative coins so they never entered circulation or got damage from handling. Being silver coins, they’re kept carefully to avoid spoiling the relatively soft metal. That’s why these Peace, Morgan, and Silver Eagle Dollars are graded as ultra-modern.

Rare 2023 Silver Dollar Errors List

Mint mistakes are coin errors that happen at the US Mint and they can add a lot of resale value to a coin. But these days, coins are digitally produced, which means they’re only struck once and have minimal mistakes. On older coins, you might find a doubled-die, a multiple-strike error, a foldover, or a capped die. Let’s explore some of the 2023 Silver Dollar Errors.

2023 American Silver Eagle Obverse Struck Thru

A strike through or struck thru error is when a foreign object slips between the die and the planchet. This contaminant leaves a stencil of its presence on the coin. On the 2023 Silver Eagle, the strike-through was on the heads side, just below the T in Liberty. It left an eye-shaped dent on the coin, dropping its near-perfect grade to MS 69 for this uncirculated $1.

2023-S Proof Peace Dollar Reverse Struck Thru

For this San Francisco Peace Dollar, the strike-through is on the back of the coin towards the top. It’s between the E and the P in the motto E Pluribus Unum. The error looks a bit like a lamination as well since part of the metal has been scooped out, leaving a rough-looking crater or pockmark. But with less than 0.1% copper, lamination is unlikely to be the cause.

2023 (P) Peace Dollar Misplaced Legend Error

This coin error is a bit difficult to explain. Usually, I, B, E, and T in the legend Liberty are partially concealed by Miss Liberty’s crown of light. But on this coin, the planchet seems to have shifted slightly south, forcing these letters to bleed onto the coin’s retaining collar. The other features of the coin have also moved slightly north as a result of design displacement.

2023 (P) American Silver Eagle Obverse Struck Thru and DDO

It’s rare to find a mistake with multiple errors. Especially if they appear on both sides of the coin. In this case, a 2023 Silver Eagle has a strike-through on the upper reverse. It appears as a dark stain between the RIB in Pluribus and the N in Fine Silver. As for the obverse error, it’s a doubled-die obverse that causes a doubling effect on the date at the bottom of the coin.
