Top 10 Most Valuable 2018 Quarter Value Coins Worth Money

Most Valuable 2018 Quarter Chart

2018 - Present

The 2018-S Pictured Rocks quarter in MS68 grade tops the value chart at $4,300. According to PCGS auction records, this sale occurred on March 17, 2019, making it the highest price ever recorded for a regular-issue 2018 quarter.

Denver Mint quarters dominate the high-value positions. The 2018-D Cumberland Island MS68 has sold for $2,900 (Heritage Auctions, January 2023), while the 2018-D Block Island MS68 reached $2,500 (eBay, January 2022). Additionally, the 2018-D Voyageurs MS68 sold for over $1,400, and the 2018-P Block Island MS68 fetched $775 in an April 2022 eBay auction before settling lower in subsequent years.

The 2018-S Block Island Silver Reverse Proof from the 50th Anniversary Set appears at $1,501 for a PR70 First Strike. This special coin was part of a limited 199,116-mintage set celebrating the San Francisco Mint’s proof production anniversary — and PCGS data shows that the Block Island quarter was the hardest coin in the set to achieve PR70 grade, with only 74 examples graded PR70 out of 1,653 total submissions at the time of early reporting.

These values reflect actual auction sales and certified populations. The chart demonstrates how condition grade and mint mark create significant price differences within the same design series.

History of The 2018 Quarter Value Program

The America the Beautiful Quarters program was authorized by Congress through Public Law 110-456, the America’s Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act of 2008, signed into law by President George W. Bush on December 23, 2008. It launched in 2010 as a successor to the 50 State Quarters series, honoring 56 national parks and historic sites across all states, territories, and the District of Columbia.

The program was introduced to Congress by Representative Mike Castle (R-Delaware), the same legislator who had championed the 50 State Quarters program years earlier. Former Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geithner selected the specific list of honored sites after consulting with state and territorial governors and former Secretary of the Interior Kenneth Salazar.

2018 marked the ninth year of the program. The U.S. Mint unveiled the reverse designs at the American Numismatic Association’s World’s Fair of Money in August 2017.

More than four dozen candidate designs were reviewed by the Citizens’ Coinage Advisory Committee and the Commission of Fine Arts before the final five selections were made. The designs were created by artists from the Artistic Infusion Program and sculpted by Mint engravers.

The 2018 quarters were released throughout the year at intervals. The Philadelphia and Denver Mints produced coins for general circulation, while the San Francisco Mint struck special editions for collectors — including both standard uncirculated S-mint coins sold directly to the public and special proof versions in clad and 90% silver.

In 2018, the U.S. Mint also released the 50th Anniversary Silver Reverse Proof Set, which became highly sought after by collectors and represented a milestone in modern U.S. Mint commemorative offerings.

Certified population reports in the Coin Identifier and Value App reveal which 2018 quarter varieties are genuinely rare based on grading service data.

An important note for beginners: the NGC VarietyPlus guide explicitly states that “no die varieties of any significance have yet surfaced” for the 2018 America the Beautiful quarter series. This means high-value coins in this series are defined almost entirely by condition grade — not rare die varieties like you find in older coins.

Key Features of The 2018 Quarter Value Coin

Understanding the distinctive features of 2018 America the Beautiful quarters helps collectors identify genuine coins, assess condition, and recognize the artistic elements that make each design unique.

The Obverse Of The 2018 Quarter

The Obverse Of The 2018 Quarter

The obverse features John Flanagan’s portrait of George Washington, originally created in 1932. This design was digitally restored in 2010 to bring out subtle details and enhance the beauty of the original model. Washington faces left in profile, with his hair tied in a ponytail ribbon.

The inscriptions include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” along the upper rim, “LIBERTY” to the left of Washington’s profile, “IN GOD WE TRUST” to the right behind his neck, and “QUARTER DOLLAR” along the lower rim.

The mint mark appears behind the ribbon below Washington’s ponytail, with “P” for Philadelphia, “D” for Denver, or “S” for San Francisco. Finding the mint mark is your first step in determining which version of the coin you have — and it directly affects its potential value.

The Reverse Of The 2018 Quarter

The Reverse Of The 2018 Quarter

All five 2018 quarters share common elements on their reverse. Each displays the year “2018” and the national motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” The name of the honored site and its state also appear as inscriptions.

The Pictured Rocks quarter was designed by Paul C. Balan and sculpted by Michael Gaudioso (initials “PCB” and “MG” visible on the coin). It depicts Chapel Rock with a white pine tree growing on top, representing Michigan’s first National Lakeshore along Lake Superior.

The Apostle Islands quarter was designed by Richard Masters and sculpted by Renata Gordon (initials “RaM” and “RG” on the coin). It shows the sea caves at Devils Island with a lighthouse in the background and a kayaker paddling in the foreground.

The Voyageurs quarter features a common loon with a rock cliff in the background, symbolizing Minnesota’s water-rich national park named for the French-Canadian fur traders who first explored the region’s waterways.

The Cumberland Island quarter was designed by Joel Iskowitz and features a snowy egret perched on a branch at the edge of a salt marsh, poised for flight.

The Block Island quarter was designed by Chris Costello and depicts a black-crowned night-heron flying over the beach at Cow Cove, with the North Lighthouse visible in the background and Sandy Point in the distance.

Other Features Of The 2018 Quarter

The 2018 quarters measure 24.26 millimeters (0.955 inches) in diameter with a thickness of 1.75 millimeters. Circulating clad quarters weigh 5.67 grams, while silver proof versions weigh 6.25 grams.

The composition varies by type. Standard circulation strikes feature a cupro-nickel clad construction with 91.67% copper and 8.33% nickel bonded to a pure copper core — technically described as 75% copper / 25% nickel on the outer layers. Silver proof versions contain 90% silver and 10% copper.

The edge is reeded with vertical grooves running around the coin’s circumference. This security feature has been standard on U.S. quarters since 1796, helping to prevent counterfeiting and edge filing.

The 2018 Philadelphia Mint quarters display notable differences in mintage across the five designs. Voyageurs topped the series at 237.4 million coins, while Cumberland Island came in lowest at 138 million.

Apostle Islands and Pictured Rocks fell in the middle range with 223.2 million and 186.7 million respectively. Block Island’s 159.6 million mintage positioned it as the second-lowest release. The Denver Mint produced comparable figures — for example, 197.8 million Voyageurs quarters and 151.6 million Cumberland Island quarters.

San Francisco Mint uncirculated collector coins had far smaller mintages: 917,580 for Pictured Rocks and 871,820 for Apostle Islands, making S-mint examples considerably scarcer than their P and D counterparts. These S-mint coins were sold directly to collectors and never released into general circulation, which is why they hold higher values in top grades. Survival data for circulating examples shows as “unknown” since modern coins lack tracking mechanisms.

Understanding Proof and DCAM Grades for 2018 Quarter Value

Many beginners wonder why some 2018 quarters with an “S” mint mark are worth much more than others. The answer comes down to two special designations: CAM and DCAM.

CAM stands for Cameo — a coin where the raised design elements have a frosty white appearance against mirror-like fields. DCAM stands for Deep Cameo (also written as DCAM or Deep Mirror Proof-Like) — a coin with an even stronger, more dramatic contrast between frosted devices and deeply mirrored fields. DCAM coins are the most desirable and command the highest prices.

For the 2018 proof quarters, PCGS data shows the Apostle Islands and Block Island reverse proof designs were the hardest to achieve a perfect PR70 grade. For instance, only 74 Block Island quarters out of 1,653 total PCGS submissions earned a PR70 — the scuffs on Washington’s portrait bust were the most common reason coins fell short. By comparison, the standard clad proof sets were much easier to achieve PR70 DCAM, with roughly 4,000 or more examples graded perfect at PCGS for each design.

The Easy Way to Know Your 2018 Quarter Value

Check your 2018 quarter’s mint mark first—located on the obverse below “IN GOD WE TRUST”—as P, D, and S strikes have different values. Examine the coin’s condition carefully; pristine surfaces without contact marks or wear indicate higher grades. Look for any minting errors like doubled dies or off-center strikes.

The Coin Identifier and Value App simplifies this process by instantly analyzing your coin’s grade, detecting errors, and providing current market values based on certified population data.

2018 Quarter Value Guides By Design

The 2018 series offers five distinct quarters, each available in multiple formats from circulation strikes to special collector editions. While most circulated examples remain at face value, high-grade specimens and special finishes command significant premiums.

Each quarter was released with P, D, and S mint marks representing Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco facilities. Collector versions include clad proofs, 90% silver proofs, and limited reverse proofs from the 50th Anniversary set. The most valuable pieces are certified MS68 and PR70 grades, where condition scarcity drives prices into four figures.

The five 2018 releases in order of circulation are:

  • 2018 Pictured Rocks Quarter – Michigan’s first National Lakeshore honored
  • 2018 Apostle Islands Quarter – Wisconsin’s Lake Superior islands featured
  • 2018 Voyageurs Quarter – Minnesota’s water-rich national park celebrated
  • 2018 Cumberland Island Quarter – Georgia’s barrier island lowest mintage
  • 2018 Block Island Quarter – Rhode Island refuge commands high MS68 values

2018 Pictured Rocks Quarter Value

2018 Pictured Rocks Quarter Value

The 2018 Pictured Rocks Quarter captures Chapel Rock with its iconic white pine tree. Designer Paul C. Balan’s composition showcases this natural wonder from Michigan’s Lake Superior shoreline, where the tree appears to defy gravity while growing from the isolated rock pillar. The initials “PCB” for Balan and “MG” for sculptor Michael Gaudioso are subtly placed on the design — a nice detail for eagle-eyed collectors.

Condition determines this quarter’s premium potential. Circulated examples hold face value, but uncirculated pieces in MS65 grade typically fetch around $5-6. The S-mint uncirculated version is notably more valuable — one MS68-graded 2018-S Pictured Rocks sold for $4,300 at a PCGS-affiliated auction on March 17, 2019, making it the top-priced regular-issue coin in the entire 2018 series. An earlier 2018-S MS68+ specimen sold for $800 in January 2019.

The 2018-P MS68, by comparison, is more modestly priced. PCGS population data shows only 16 examples graded MS68 at PCGS with none finer, underscoring the genuine scarcity at this level even for the common Philadelphia mint.

2018 Apostle Islands Quarter Value

2018 Apostle Islands Quarter Value

This quarter captures Devils Island’s distinctive sea caves alongside Lake Superior’s shoreline. Designer Richard Masters and sculptor Renata Gordon created a composition that immortalizes Wisconsin’s geological marvel, where water sculpted ancient rock into chambers that glow with reflected light during certain seasons.

Both Philadelphia and Denver facilities produced this quarter with consistent quality standards, though market pricing reveals intriguing differences between the two mints. Standard MS67 grades show distinct pricing — Philadelphia examples average $12 while Denver pieces command approximately $20. A notable Philadelphia auction documented one 2018-P MS68+ specimen (Population 1, none finer) achieving $2,050 in April 2019.

One important note for proof collectors: PCGS data shows the Apostle Islands Reverse Proof design had one of the lowest PR70 rates in the 50th Anniversary Set. Only 235 examples earned PR70 out of 1,870 total PCGS submissions — making a perfect-grade Apostle Islands reverse proof one of the harder coins to find in the series.

2018 Voyageurs Quarter Value

2018 Voyageurs Quarter Value

The design features a common loon gliding before ancient rock cliffs, capturing the essence of a state where French-Canadian voyageurs — the fur traders for whom the park is named — once navigated interconnected lakes and rivers. It translates frontier exploration into a numismatic narrative that resonates with collectors seeking regional authenticity.

Philadelphia and Denver maintained their roles as circulation strike producers, while San Francisco struck regular uncirculated quarters specifically for numismatic distribution — a strategic shift responding to growing collector demand for pristine examples bearing the “S” mint mark without proof finishes.

Market performance demonstrates stratified collector interest. One MS67 specimen achieved $225 in June 2019 through eBay auction. Standard clad proof pieces in PR70DCAM condition settled around $100 (PCGS auction, December 26, 2018), while silver proof counterparts reached $200 that August. A particularly interesting variant is the 2018-D Voyageurs MS68 PL — the PL designation stands for Proof-Like, meaning the coin has unusually reflective fields for a business strike — and one such example sold for $595 through an NGC-affiliated auction, well above standard MS68 prices.

2018 Block Island Quarter Value

2018 Block Island Quarter Value

The 2018 Block Island Quarter emerged from design candidates developed through consultation with refuge representatives who sought to emphasize Rhode Island’s coastal migration corridor. Designer Chris Costello’s selected composition visually articulates the refuge’s role as an Atlantic flyway stopover, rather than simply documenting wildlife presence.

San Francisco issued a Reverse Proof 50th Anniversary Set for this coin — a set with an authorized mintage of 199,116, meaning these coins are actually quite limited. The reverse proof finish inverts the traditional appearance: instead of mirrored fields and frosted devices (like a normal proof), reverse proofs have frosted fields and polished, mirror-like devices. The Block Island quarter was the most difficult coin in the set to grade PR70, with only 74 examples certified perfect out of 1,653 total PCGS submissions. Most problems were attributed to scuffing on the truncation of Washington’s portrait.

A buyer paid $1,500 in an August 17, 2018 eBay sale for a PCGS PR70 reverse proof example before the market stabilized. The 2018-S Block Island Silver Proof in standard PR70 DCAM grade sold for $175 in a PCGS-tracked auction on September 8, 2018.

2018 Cumberland Island Quarter Value

2018 Cumberland Island Quarter Value

The design reflects Cumberland Island — Georgia’s largest undeveloped barrier island, designated a National Seashore in 1972, making it the 45th coin released in the America the Beautiful program. Designer Joel Iskowitz chose a snowy egret to represent where maritime forests meet the Atlantic, symbolizing the island’s commitment to coastal preservation.

The Cumberland Island quarter has one of the most dramatic auction records in the series. The 2018-D Cumberland Island MS68 sold for $2,900 in a Heritage Auctions sale in January 2023. With a Philadelphia mintage of just 138 million — the lowest of any 2018 circulation quarter — this design’s natural scarcity helps explain premium pricing even in grades below MS68.

Standard clad proofs grading PR70 typically settle around $25. Silver Limited Edition Proof Sets feature 90% silver content with Deep Cameo contrast — First Strike designations from 2024 auctions achieved $99 for PR70DCAM specimens, while regular PR70DCAM examples from 2020 realized $17, reflecting early-release premiums versus established market pricing.

Rare 2018 Quarter Value Error List

The 2018 America the Beautiful quarters honored five national sites across Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Georgia, and Rhode Island. While most examples remain at face value, several minting mishaps have surfaced among these releases.

Error coins from this series attract both specialized collectors and those building complete America the Beautiful sets. Remember: an error coin must be authenticated by a professional grading service like PCGS or NGC to command full market value — raw (ungraded) error coins sell at steep discounts.

1. Die Cracks and Die Cuds Errors

Die deterioration produces some of the most recognizable errors on 2018 quarters. During production, dies strike thousands of coins daily until metal fatigue causes breaks along the surface.

When fractures develop, they create raised lines across the finished coin known as die cracks. These appear most frequently on Pictured Rocks and Voyageurs quarters from the Denver facility. When a die crack reaches the coin’s rim and the metal between the crack and the rim breaks away, it forms a larger error called a cud — a raised, blob-like area of flat metal extending inward from the rim. Several Voyageurs quarters show notable cud formations near the 3 o’clock position on the reverse, and these specimens command $10 to $35 depending on cud size and placement.

2. Missing Clad Layer Errors

America the Beautiful quarters consist of a copper core bonded between two nickel-copper outer layers. Manufacturing defects occasionally prevent proper bonding, causing one layer to separate before striking.

The result exposes the reddish-brown copper underneath while the opposite side retains its normal silver appearance. Missing clad layer errors weigh slightly less than standard quarters — approximately 5.1 grams versus the usual 5.67 grams, so a kitchen scale can be a useful first check. A 2018 Cumberland Island quarter missing its reverse clad layer sold for $1,200, establishing this as one of the series’ most valuable errors.

3. Improperly Annealed Planchet Errors

This error type is unique to clad coins and is especially interesting in the 2018 series. Before striking, coin blanks are heated in an annealing furnace to soften the metal. If the blanks stay too long or the furnace oxygen levels aren’t controlled, copper atoms migrate to the surface and form a reddish, brown, or black discoloration layer.

A 2018 Pictured Rocks (Michigan) quarter showing an improperly annealed planchet error has been documented by collectors — one example was pulled directly from a bank roll in uncirculated condition. A comparable 2018 Wisconsin Apostle Islands quarter with this error sold for $250 in MS65 condition, well above typical error coin prices. Raw examples typically sell between $35 and $120 depending on the severity of the discoloration and condition.

4. Struck-Through Errors

Foreign materials occasionally enter the striking chamber during production. When debris, grease, or other contaminants lodge between the die and planchet, they create struck-through errors.

Grease strikes produce the most common variant. Oil accumulation on dies prevents complete metal flow during striking. The 2018 Block Island quarters show several documented cases where grease obscured portions of Washington’s portrait, particularly around facial features. These “filled die” examples typically sell for $10 to $40. A 2018 Cumberland Island quarter with grease struck through on the obverse, obscuring some inscriptions, sold for $10 in circulated condition.

5. Partial Collar Errors

A partial collar error happens when the planchet is only partially seated in the collar die during striking. One side of the coin shows the normal reeded edge, while the other appears smooth and slightly beveled — giving the coin an uneven, slanted-edge appearance when viewed from the side.

Collectors looking at 2018 Apostle Islands quarters should examine edge characteristics for possible partial collar specimens. These errors are relatively scarce for modern quarters and can command $50 to $150 or more depending on how dramatic the partial collar effect is.

6. Doubled Die Obverse (DDO) Errors

Doubled die errors occur when the die receives multiple impressions from the hub at slightly different angles during production. On the finished coin, this creates a visible doubling — a ghostly second image — of design elements or inscriptions. On the obverse of 2018 quarters, look for doubling in the word “LIBERTY,” the date, or on Washington’s portrait features.

The value of a doubled die error depends almost entirely on how visible and dramatic the doubling is. Subtle doubling may add only a small premium, while strong doubling visible to the naked eye can add $50 to $200+ over the coin’s standard grade value.

FAQ About 2018 Quarter Value

1. What makes 2018 America the Beautiful quarters valuable?

Most circulated 2018 quarters remain at face value. However, coins in exceptional, uncirculated condition command significant premiums.

MS67 examples typically sell for $12–$22, while MS68 coins are considerably rarer and more valuable. The 2018-S Pictured Rocks MS68 holds the series auction record at $4,300 (PCGS, March 17, 2019), while the 2018-D Cumberland Island MS68 sold for $2,900 (Heritage Auctions, January 2023). Denver Mint quarters in top grades are scarcer than Philadelphia counterparts, explaining their premium pricing.

2. What is the 50th Anniversary Silver Reverse Proof Set?

The 2018-S Silver Reverse Proof Set celebrated the San Francisco Mint’s 50 years of proof production. Each set had an actual mintage of 199,116, making these coins genuinely limited.

These special coins feature an inverted finish — frosted background with polished design elements, opposite of regular proofs. The quarters contain 90% silver composition. The Block Island quarter was the hardest to achieve a perfect PR70 grade, with only 74 examples earning that designation out of 1,653 total PCGS submissions, partly due to scuffing on Washington’s portrait.

3. How can you tell if your 2018 quarter is worth grading?

Professional certification by PCGS or NGC is financially worthwhile only for coins that appear to be MS67 or higher (for business strikes) or PR69/PR70 (for proofs). Certification costs roughly $20–$50 per coin.

MS67 quarters typically sell for $12–$22, while MS68 specimens can reach hundreds to thousands of dollars. For most circulated or lightly used coins, grading fees would exceed any value increase — so save certification for coins that are essentially perfect.

4. Why are Denver Mint (D) 2018 quarters often worth more than Philadelphia (P) at high grades?

Denver Mint quarters in MS68 condition are scarcer in certified populations than their Philadelphia equivalents, even though both mints produced hundreds of millions of coins. The reasons are not fully understood, but market data consistently shows Denver examples commanding 20–50% more than Philadelphia strikes at the MS67 level and significantly more at MS68.

The 2018-D Voyageurs MS68, for instance, sold for over $1,400 — well above the comparable Philadelphia price — illustrating this pattern across the series.

5. What is a Proof-Like (PL) designation and does it affect 2018 quarter value?

A Proof-Like designation (abbreviated PL by NGC) is awarded to business-strike coins that exhibit unusually reflective, mirror-like fields, similar to a proof coin, even though they were not struck on specially prepared planchets. These are regular circulation coins that happen to display exceptional surface quality.

The 2018-D Voyageurs MS68 PL sold for $595 through NGC-affiliated auction — a premium over standard MS68 prices. If you have a Denver or Philadelphia 2018 quarter with unusually mirror-like fields, it may qualify for the PL designation, which can meaningfully increase its value.

6. Are there any significant die varieties for 2018 quarters?

Unlike older coin series, 2018 quarters have no significant die varieties recognized by PCGS or NGC’s major variety guides. NGC’s VarietyPlus guide explicitly states that no significant die varieties have surfaced for the 2018 America the Beautiful series.

Some minor doubled die varieties are documented by specialist organizations like CONECA and VarietyVista, but these command only modest premiums above standard values. High claims of $100–$250 for “strong doubled die” errors for these coins appear to be hypothetical rather than confirmed by actual auction records.

7. How does the coin’s silver content affect 2018 quarter value?

The 90% silver proof and reverse proof versions contain approximately 5.625 grams of pure silver each. At silver’s November 2025 spot price of around $50 per troy ounce, the melt value of a 2018-S silver proof quarter was approximately $9.12 — meaningful intrinsic value even for lower-grade examples.

Standard clad circulation strikes have a metal melt value of less than $0.08, which is why condition-based collector value is so important for those coins.

8. What is the most affordable way to collect the complete 2018 quarter series?

The easiest and most affordable approach is to collect all five designs in circulated or low-grade uncirculated condition from pocket change or bank rolls. All five P and D mint designs are still encountered in circulation and worth only face value.

For a more substantial set, the U.S. Mint’s 2018 America the Beautiful Quarters Uncirculated Coin Set contains all 10 business-strike coins (five P-mint and five D-mint) in original Mint packaging — an affordable starting point for beginners without paying grading premiums.

9. What should I do if I find a 2018 quarter that looks unusual or discolored?

Discoloration alone does not automatically mean an error coin. Environmental damage, cleaning, and contact with chemicals can all cause discoloration that reduces a coin’s value. A genuine improperly annealed planchet error — caused by prolonged furnace exposure during manufacturing — shows very specific copper-red, black, or brown toning with the coin’s reeding displaying a normal red copper color at the ridges.

If you find a 2018 quarter that looks different, check the weight (should be 5.67 grams for a standard quarter) and compare its appearance with known examples online before spending money on grading. Submit only to PCGS, NGC, or ANACS for authentication.

10. Is it too late to find valuable 2018 quarters in circulation or bank rolls?

It is still absolutely possible to find uncirculated 2018 quarters in bank rolls — especially in bags or rolls from credit unions and smaller banks. The key is finding coins that never circulated and avoided contact marks.

However, the window for finding true gem-quality examples this way is narrowing as coins accumulate bag marks during storage and transport. Collectors who searched rolls in 2018–2020 had the best chances of finding MS66 or MS67-quality examples. Today, roll searching remains viable for completing a set or finding circulated examples, but high-grade MS67+ coins are increasingly coming from the certified secondary market.
