History of the 2018 Quarter

To encourage new generations of Americans to get into coin collecting, the US Mint will sometimes create commemorative programs that involve circulating coins. From 2010 to 2021, they issued America the Beautiful Quarters, commonly known as ATB Quarters. These coins feature a national park or monument from the 50 US States, DC, and 5 US Territories.

Five coins were released every year, and in 2018, the five Quarters produced represented Wisconsin, Rhode Island, Minnesota, Michigan, and Georgia. The order of coin release was based on the date when the park or monument on the coin was officially opened. ATB coins have the same design – an outer circle with the state, park, or monument, and the mint date.

The outer circle also has the motto E Pluribus Unum. The inner circle has an engraving of the named park or monument. The front of these coins features George Washington facing left. These coins were released into circulation with the hope that budding numismatists would collect all 56 of them in proof strikes, earning additional revenue for the US Mint.

2018 Quarter Strikes

2018 Quarters were struck as regular strikes or business strikes for everyday transactions, uncirculated sets for collectors, proof coins, and reverse proof coins. Uncirculated coins are made with business strike dies on burnished blanks. The blanks (aka planchets) are polished by tumbling them in rotating vats or drums filled with 6mm stainless steel balls or beads.

For proof and reverse-proof coins, both the die and the blanks are burnished. Proof coins have a mirror-like field (that’s the backdrop of the coin) and a frosted device (i.e. the images on the coin). Reverse-proofs have a frosted field and a mirror-like device. The shiny sections of the die are scrubbed with horsehair brushes while the hazy parts are textured with lasers.

Computerised frosting is efficient and long-lasting so most of these coins are Deep Cameo or Ultra Cameo, meaning they have the next possible contrast between the field and the device. Older coins (before 1970) used an acid wash to frost the coins and it would fade every time the die struck a coin. That’s why older batches only had DCAM and CAM for the first 100.

Features of the 2018 Quarter

When you’re talking about coins, it’s important to use the right numismatic terms (that’s the study, collection, and trade of coins, tokens, medals, paper money, etc.) Numismatists call the front or heads side of a coin its obverse while the tails side is its reverse. The thin side of the coin is its edge. It sometimes has ridges called reeds and a border called a collar or rim.

We already mentioned coin strikes, the field, the device, and the planchet, but the words on a coin are called legends or mottos. Most 2018 Quarters were cupronickel clad and proofs were coined in both silver and clad versions. These 2018 Quarters all have the same obverse design. It’s their reverse that differs. So let’s discuss the features of the 2018 Quarter.

On the neckline cut-off, JF is engraved to identify the coin designer, John Flanagan.

Because five different quarters were minted in 2018, these 2018 Quarter Value Guides will go by mint mark before state.

2018 Quarter Grading

Usually, only Morgan and Peace Dollars are graded as PL (proof-like) or DMPL (deep-mirror-proof-like). This grade covers coins that were struck using regular dies but are in such good condition that they could be mistaken for proofs. But Modern ATB Quarters get this designation as well since they’re digitally minted and are available in MS 67 or higher.

Rare 2018 Quarter Errors List

Mint mistakes can make a coin way more valuable in the resale space. But ultra-modern coins – that’s anything after 1982 – have fewer errors. Digitally sculpted coins from 2007 onward are even less likely to be flawed. But the 2018 Quarter did have some problems so let’s explore the 2018 Quarter Errors and see how they translate in the secondary market.

2018-D Cumberland Island Quarter Defective Reverse Clad Layer

2018-D Cumberland Island Quarter Defective Reverse Clad Layer

As we said, most 2018 Quarters had a copper core under cupronickel cladding. On this coin, the back of the planchet was defective so a diagonal strip got scraped off during the minting process, exposing the copper below. The coin is in a relatively high grade – MS 65 according to NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company). This mint mistake raised the resale value to $432.

2018-P Voyageurs Quarter Obverse Cud Error

2018-P Voyageurs Quarter Obverse Cud Error

A cud error – also known as a die break – is when a die deteriorates due to consistent use and ends up with cracks, breaks, or gashes. At this point, the die is generally replaced with a new one. But the coins that it strikes in its final stages of use might have dents, slashes, or scooped-out metal due to the cud. Cuds on the rim of a coin range from $5 to $14 on eBay.

2018-S Block Island Quarter Obverse Struck Thru

The US Mint is largely pristine. But once in a while, some foreign object finds its way in and wedges itself between the die and the coin blank. It might fuse onto the coin or it may slide off, leaving traces of its existence. This is called a struck thru or strike-through error and it’s more valuable if you can identify the contaminant. On eBay, MS 66 ranges from $40 to $55.

2018-P Pictured Rocks Quarter Multiple Errors

2018-P Pictured Rocks Quarter Multiple Errors

If you can get your coin errors verified by PCGS, ANACS, or NGC, you’ll get a far better price on the secondary market. But even for ungraded coins, you can make a decent sale on eBay if you clearly list the errors. This Michigan Quarter – for example – has mistakes on both sides i.e. die streaks on the obverse, the Y in Liberty touches the neck, and die chips on the reverse.
