History of the Anna May Wong Quarter

Fashion icon, celebrated international actor, and historic social activist Anna May Wong is remembered as the first Chinese-American woman to feature in a Hollywood film. Then, the film industry was rife with overt racism and characterized by predominantly Anglo-American gatekeepers. Wong had to prove herself worthy of inclusion into notoriously the exclusive film industry.

Born on January 3, 1905, as Wong Liu Tsong, her family nick-named her Anna May. Her first role in the film industry was as an extra in the 1919 motion picture The Red Lantern.  She worked as an extra in several films before her major breakthrough in 1922, where she was featured as the leading character in The Toll of The Sea.

Wong’s long career was not limited to motion pictures. She also played theater and was featured in numerous television shows. Her role in the 1951 television show The Gallery of Madame Liu-Tsong made her the first Asian American to play a leading role in a U.S. television show.

Anna May appeared in more than 60 movies, including one of the first films made in technicolor. Her career in theatre spans from London to New York and beyond.

It is also worth noting that Wong’s impeccable sense of style made her an international fashion icon. She continues to be an inspiration not just to today’s filmmakers but to fashion designers as well.

Faced with what she described as excessive discrimination and racism in Hollywood, Wong moved to Europe, where she landed roles in Fresh, German and English movies.

Anna May Wong passed on in February 1961, a year after being awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame.

When it comes to grading a 2022 Anna May Wong quarter, the most important factor to consider is the coin’s condition. If you suspect you have a rare coin, have it checked by a professional coin grading service.

That said, you, too, can casually grade your quarter. Pay attention to signs of wear on the high contact points, such as George Washington’s cheek and hair. The upper and lower parts of the coin are also prone to smoothing.

On the reverse, you may notice signs of wear on Wong’s right cheek and the inscriptions at the bottom.

An Anna May Wong quarter must have a radiant surface to be graded as mint. There should be no wear, contact marks or breaks on the coin’s surface, both on the obverse and reverse.

Doubled dies are some of the most common minting errors. This error occurs when the die strikes the coin at slightly different angles, doubling the design.

Collectors will pay between $35 and $50 for an Anna May Wong quarter with a doubled die obverse error. The error’s exact value will depend on the coin’s condition, but you can expect more than face value for a quarter with such an error.

A die chip occurs when a small piece of the die breaks, leaving a hole on the die’s surface. When the die strikes the planchet, pieces of metal fill the small hole, resulting in a raised bump on the coin’s surface.

Some Anna May Wong quarters spot a die chip error on Wong’s index finger and hair fringe. Not all coins will have both die chip errors, but if you find one, it might be worth as much as $30 in circulated condition. Buyers are willing to pay more for uncirculated quarters.

2022 Anna May Wong Tear Drop Quarter Error

The teardrop error is unique to the Anna May Wong quarters.  The ‘’teardrop’’ is a die chip error on Wong’s right cheek below her eye, making it look like she is shedding tears.

Collectors are paying as much as $98 for coins with such a tear-drop error!

A word of caution, though: Ensure the teardrop error is a genuine die chip error from the mint, not a man-made scrape on the coin’s surface.
