History of the 1901 Morgan Silver Dollar

The first Morgan dollars appeared in 1878, and their minting lasted 27 years until 1904. They appeared five years after the US Congress enacted the 4th Coinage Act and ended the free silver coinage.

Since that step decreased the price of this precious metal, newly introduced laws allowed the free coinage of silver again. The Bland-Allison Act required the Treasury to buy a certain amount of silver for silver dollar production.

That was an opportunity for design master George T. Morgan to create these beautiful nation’s silver dollars. Their minting started in Philadelphia on March 11th, 1878, and lasted until a regulation change.

Once the Treasury became free of purchasing silver and exhausted its supply, it ended those coins’ production in 1904.
