History of the Wilma Mankiller Quarter

Born on November 18, 1945 into a poor working-class family, Wilma Mankiller beat all odds to become the first Principle Chief of the Cherokee Nation.

In her teens, her father was offered a job in California, and her family moved to a San Francisco housing project. According to Mankiller, this move was part of a plan by the Bureau of Indian Affairs to dupe Native Americans to leave their ancestral land.

Her childhood was characterized by poverty and racism. As a young adult, she resettled in the Cherokee Nation, where her social activism took shape. Wilma established the Community Development Department, which provided basic services, including water and housing, for the Native American communities.

In 1983, Ross Swimmer, the prevailing Principal Chief, named Wilma Mankiller his running mate in the general election. When the team won, Mankiller became the first female deputy chief of the Cherokee Nation.

In 1987, Mankiller won the general elections and was re-elected for another term. Under her leadership, employment doubled, school enrollments tripled, and new houses, health clinics, and social welfare programs for children were established.

Mankiller was recognized in the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 1993 and awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1998, three years after she left public office. She spent the rest of her life doing philanthropy for her tribe.

Wilma Mankiller passed away on April 6, 2020, at age 64, after a brave battle with pancreatic cancer. The 2022 Wilma Mankiller quarter became the third circulating coin in the American Women Quarter series and is an honorable tribute to Mankiller’s great achievements.

The imagery on the reverse is more detailed. On it is a portrait of the Cherokee Nation’s leader, Wilma Mankiller, wrapped in a traditional shawl.

As the wind blows behind her, Mankiller resolutely looks ahead past the Cherokee Nation’s seven-pointed star and into the horizon as if peering into the future.

Our country’s name is arched at the top along the inner rim while the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, meaning “Out of One Many”, appears at the bottom alongside the coin’s denomination, inscribed as QUARTER DOLLAR.

Mankiller’s title, PRINCIPLE CHIEF, appears across the coin, followed by a Native American inscription of the English title.

Wilma Mankiller Quarter Value Guides

Is the 2022 Wilma Mankiller Quarter worth anything?

This is a very recent coin, and there is still room for its value to increase past the face value. The value of a Wilma Mankiller quarter depends on factors such as the coin’s condition, mint marks, and notable errors.

There are four types of the Wilma Mankiller quarter. These include the:

  • 2022-P Wilma Mankiller Quarter
  • 2022-D Wilma Mankiller Quarter
  • 2022-S Wilma Mankiller Quarter
  • 2022-S Silver Proof Wilma Mankiller Quarter

Collectors typically consider the mint mark when adding premium coins to their collection. Let’s look at the value of these coins based on the mint mark.

2022-P Wilma Mankiller Quarter Value

2022-P Wilma Mankiller Quarter Value

The Philadelphia Mint produced an estimated 310,000,000 Wilma Mankiller quarters in 2022. You are absolutely right if you think that’s a lot of coins!

Because of the high mintage, the Wilma Mankiller quarter is very common and affordable for any collector.

Expect to sell your Mankiller quarter for about $0.30 to $0.40 if it’s a circulated coin. Unless your quarter has a notable minting error, it is likely not worth more than its face value.

Uncirculated Wilma Mankiller quarters are equally plentiful, especially in lower mint state grades. But the population dwindles further up the scale, with MS69 and MS70 gems being relatively scarce.

In uncirculated mint condition, you can expect as much as $0.60 for a quarter graded MS60 and about $8.50 for one with an MS65 designation. Rare gems with a grade MS67 cost as much as $20.

A quarter graded MS64 broke the record in 2022 at an eBay auction when it sold for a whopping $1,300, making it the most valuable Wilma Mankiller quarter sold to date.

2022-D Wilma Mankiller Quarter Value

2022-D Wilma Mankiller Quarter Value

The Denver mint struck about 296,800,000 Wilma Mankiller quarters in 2022.

The value of circulated examples in the series ranges between $0.30 and $0.40.

Uncirculated 2022-D Wilma Mankiller quarters will fetch about $0.60 to $15, depending on the coin’s condition. But this value can increase to $20 for gem-quality quarters graded MS67 and above.

The most expensive 2022-D Wilma Mankiller is graded MS68 and sold at a 2022 eBay auction for an impressive $2,800.

2022-S Wilma Mankiller Quarter Value

2022-S Wilma Mankiller Quarter Value

Last but not least, we have the San Francisco facility, where an estimated 301,000 2022 Wilma Mankiller quarters were struck, making this the lowest mintage in this series.

Despite the low mintage, these quarters coins are accessible and affordable in circulating and uncirculated condition. Circulated quarters cost between $0.30 and $0.40 apiece, depending on the condition. Worn quarters are valued less than ones with slight wear.

An uncirculated 2022-S Wilma Mankiller quarter will fetch about $0.60 if graded MS60 and $15 if graded MS66. Gem-quality examples or those with an MS67 to MS70 designation can bring in at least $20.

2022-S Silver Proof Wilma Mankiller Quarter Value

2022-S Silver Proof Wilma Mankiller Quarter Value

In addition to the circulating Wilma Mankiller quarters minted at the San Francisco facility, the mint also produced silver clad proof coins.

You can identify silver proof coins by their brilliant surface and near-perfect design and inscriptions on the heads and tails side of the coin.

The U.S. Mint produces a small number of proof quarters for collectors. Because silver-clad Wilma Mankiller quarters are scarce, they tend to be more valuable than regular coins.

Certified examples of the 2022-S Proof Wilma Mankiller quarters are worth as much as $7.25 when graded MS60, but this value can increase to $11 for quarters graded MS67.

If you happen to come across gem-quality examples of the Wilma Mankiller quarter, it may sell for as much as $25 to $35.

Wilma Mankiller Quarter Grading

Grading the 2022 Wilma Mankiller quarter is an exercise in observing the coin for signs of wear. A coin’s physical condition is among the most important factors when determining its value.

The Sheldon Coin Grading scale is used to designate a value to a coin depending on the extent of wear. These values range from Poor to Gem Quality.

Although most Wilma Mankiller quarters are circulated, they are generally in good condition as of now; after all, they are still very young coins.

When grading these quarters, look for signs of wear on the high contact points. On the obverse, for example, pay attention to George Washington’s face, hair and jacket collar, which are prone to smoothing.

On the reverse, Wilma’s blanket and hair are common high contact points that will show signs of smoothing in circulated examples. Some wear may also be seen on the star’s surface and one or more of its seven points.

A Wilma Mankiller quarter should be in perfect condition for it to be graded as mint. The coin should shine brilliantly and be free of flaws such as scratches, breaks or dings.

Wilma Mankiller Quarter Errors

Minting errors can increase your coin’s value significantly.

Here are some of the most popular errors to look out for when collecting Wilma Mankiller quarters.

2022 Wilma Mankiller Die Clash Quarter Error

The die clash error on 2022 Wilma Mankiller quarters is highly sought-after among collectors. As the name suggests, a die clash error occurs when the obverse and reverse dies hit against each other.

Due to the sheer force, the obverse die’s design might transfer to the reverse die or vice versa. This can result in a coin showing some reverse design elements on the obverse or vice versa.

A 2022 Wilma Mankiller die clash error coin is worth as much as $100. Uncirculated quarters with such an error can fetch up to $150.

2022 Wilma Mankiller Retained Cud Quarter Error

Some Wilma Mankiller quarters spot a retained cud error. This error occurs when a piece of the edge of a hammer or anvil die breaks but isn’t immediately disconnected from the die, leaving a raised crack in the die.

If the Mint continues using the die with a cracked edge, the resulting coins will have a raised defect or the appearance of a crack along the rim. The crack will also weaken the image or inscription on the affected part of the coin.

Sellers are asking for as much as $300 for a 2022 Wilma Mankiller quarter with a retained cud error. So, if you are lucky to come across such an error coin, you might be able to sell it for good money.
