The 2024 Quarter is the third annual release in the American Women Quarters (AWQ) Program, authorized by the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020 (Public Law 116-330). Representatives Barbara Lee and Anthony Gonzalez co-sponsored the bill — a rare bipartisan effort.

The original plan called for 56 quarters, one for each state and territory. That got trimmed to four years to make room for the 2026 Semiquincentennial coins. Each 2024 design was struck for roughly ten weeks — a short production window that helps long-term collectibility.

The obverse portrait of George Washington comes from sculptor Laura Gardin Fraser’s 1931 design. At least 11 doubled die obverse varieties on one design. That’s what makes the Pauli Murray quarter a cherrypicker’s dream.

Murray was a civil rights activist, lawyer, writer, and the first African American woman ordained as an Episcopal priest. Their legal scholarship directly influenced Thurgood Marshall’s arguments in Brown v. Board of Education, which gives this coin real weight for civil rights history collectors.

Someone found a $350 coin at Walmart. That’s the Walker DDR story.

Dr. Mary Edwards Walker was a Civil War surgeon and the only woman ever awarded the Medal of Honor. She was also an abolitionist, women’s rights advocate, and dress reform champion. Wearing pants was illegal for women at the time. She wore them anyway and got arrested for it — repeatedly.

The reverse shows Walker holding her surgical kit with the Medal of Honor on her uniform. Philadelphia MS66 examples sell for around $15, Denver MS67 specimens have reached $44 at auction, and San Francisco MS67 pieces trade at around $23.

Here’s where it gets exciting. Numismatic News reported in January 2025 that the 2024-P Dr. Mary Edwards Walker Doubled Die Reverse — listed by Dr. James Wiles of VarietyVista as VDDR-001 — was pulled from circulation at a Walmart. The doubling shows on the Medal of Honor’s star points and Walker’s hair. Raw examples trade for $75–$205, and certified examples have sold for $350 or more. Hub shifting during the single-squeeze hubbing process at Philadelphia is the likely cause. We think this is the best cherrypicking opportunity in the entire 2024 series.

2024 Celia Cruz Quarter Value

A Philadelphia MS66 sold for $61. That’s four times what most other 2024 designs bring in the same grade.

Celia Cruz — the “Queen of Salsa” — transformed Latin music over a six-decade career. This quarter went on sale at the U.S. Mint on August 7, 2024, making it the 14th coin in the AWQ series.

The reverse captures Cruz mid-performance in a flowing rumba-style dress with “¡Azúcar!” (Spanish for “Sugar!”) displayed prominently. Both the Cruz and Zitkala-Ša designs pull in non-traditional collectors — Latin music fans and Native American history enthusiasts — and that crossover demand drives the strongest premiums of the five 2024 designs.

Zitkala-Ša — born Gertrude Simmons Bonnin on the Yankton Sioux reservation in South Dakota — was an author, composer, and activist. She wrote the first American Indian opera (The Sun Dance Opera, 1913) and co-founded the National Council of American Indians in 1926. She pushed for Native American citizenship years before it was finally granted in 1924.

The reverse shows her in traditional Yankton Sioux dress holding a book, with a stylized sun and a cardinal — her name means “Red Bird” — in the composition. This is the most valuable design in the 2024 set for circulation strikes.
