An off-strike error is one in which the design, on the obverse or reverse is not centered but is instead struck more toward the right or left edge.
This error can occur when there is a misalignment between the planchet and hammer or anvil die. So, instead of the die striking the design on its rightful place, you will notice the coin design is shifted away from the center.
