2. 2012-P MS63 Denali ATB Quarter Doubled Die Reverse Error

The doubled die is one of the most common errors you will come across when collecting 2012 quarters. This means adding this error to your collection can be relatively easy.

A doubled die error occurs when the die strikes the planchet multiple times at slightly different angles. This results in a visible doubling of the inscriptions and devices on the obverse or reverse of the coin.

The value of a doubled die error mostly depends on the intensity of doubling. A quarter with strong doubling will generally be more valuable than one with subtle doubling.

3. 2012-D MS65 El Yunque Quarter With Die Chip Error

This error occurs when a small piece flakes off the die’s surface, leaving behind a shallow hole that’s filled with metal from continued use of the die. Eventually, the metal-filled hollow will leave an impression when the die strikes the planchet.

4. 2012-P MS64 Hawaii Quarter Overdate Error

An overdate is a rare error and can be worth a fortune—consider yourself very lucky if you come across such a coin. As the name suggests, this is an error in which a different digit is re-punched over another, in this case the digits being the date on the coin.

As mentioned, overdate errors are extremely rare because the United States Mint now engraves the date on the master die, minimizing the chances of the wrong die being used to punch and re-punch digits. That said, this error can still occur and has previously been discovered in the 2012 quarter series.

A rare 2012-P Hawaii quarter showed up with an overdate in which the number 1 was punched over the number 0 on the coin, resulting in a coin with the date 2112 instead of 2012.

6. 2012-D MS64 Acadia N. Park Rim Cud Error Quarter

An interesting error you might come across when collecting 2012 ATB quarters is the rim cud. This error occurs when a piece breaks off from the die’s edge leaving behind a hole that eventually fills with metal.   

When the die strikes the planchet, the metal-filled hole leaves its impression on the planchet’s edge. On the final coin, a rim cud appears like a raised lateral bump standing out from the rest of the rather smoother edge.

Larger, more dramatic rim cuds tend to be more valuable but, as usual, the coin’s condition will significantly contribute to determining the coin’s value as well.

During a 2022 eBay auction a collector paid an impressive $610 for a 2012-D Acadia Park quarter graded MS64 with a rim cud error.

 

7. 2012-D MS63 El Yunque 30% Off-Center Strike Quarter Error

Another high-value error on our 2012 quarter errors list is the off-center strike. This error occurs when the die strikes the planchet away from the center and more toward the edge.

So instead of the design being centered it may appear shifted toward the edge of the coin, often resulting in some of the design elements missing.  Slight movement of the planchet or die can result in an off-center strike error.

The value of an off-center error is weighted against a percentage. The greater the percentage, the more valuable the error will tend to be. For example, a quarter with a 30% off-center strike will generally be more eye-catching and valuable than one with a 5% off-center strike.

In 2021, a collector at a Great Collections auction paid an eye-watering $720 for a 2012-D El Yunque quarter graded MS63 with a 30% off-center strike error.

 

8. 2012-P MS63 Denali National Park Improperly Annealed Planchet Quarter Error

Another error that appears in the 2012 quarters series is the improperly annealed error. Annealing is the heating and cooling applied during the planchet-making process. The heat and cold help to harden and soften the planchet ready for striking.

Sometimes there are variations in the heating and cooling, and this can have several consequences. One of these consequences is that the metal from which the planchets are made can change color.

So, instead of the usual copper-nickel color, the planchet may take on a different color such as black, grey, yellow, orange, purple, or even red. This results in an improperly annealed quarter due to the variation in the coin’s color.
