5. 2009-D MS65 Rim Cud Errors Sacagawea Dollar

6. 2009-D MS63 Curved Clipped Planchet Sacagawea Dollar Error

Another dramatic error you might encounter when collecting 2009 Sacagawea dollars is the curved clipped planchet error. As the name suggests this is an error in which a portion of the coin’s edge is clipped off or broken.

A clipped planchet error occurs when the blanking press overlaps previously punched out holes on the planchet strip, resulting in metal missing from the planchet.

Ideally, the blanking press will cut perfectly circular blanks or planchets, ready for minting. Sometimes though, technical or human faults can cause the blanking press to cut out the edges of the planchets, resulting in a clipped planchet.

There are various types of clipped planchet errors with the most common ones being curved, straight, and ragged. Look out for coins with large, visible clipped edges as these are usually more valuable.

7. 2009-P MS62 Missing Clad Layer Sacagawea Dollar Error

Another nice addition to your collection would be a 2009 Sacagawea dollar with a missing clad layer error. As the name implies, this is a coin in which the upper missing clad layer has peeled off. 

The clad layer may peel off on one or both sides of the coin, resulting in a partial or full missing clad layer error.  Peeling usually occurs due to the presence of impurities in the alloy, which can weaken the bond between the copper core and the upper clad layer.

The most common is the partial missing clad layer error in which one side of the coin has a peeled off upper layer, exposing the copper core while the clad layer remains in-tact on the other side of the coin.

All in all, a missing clad layer error coin is rare but the upside is that it can be quite valuable. For example, a collector on eBay paid a whopping $820 in 2020 for a 2009-P Sacagawea dollar graded MS62 with a missing clad layer error.

8. 2009-D MS65 Off Center Sacagawea Dollar Error

Another high-value error in the 2009 Sacagawea dollar series is the off-center strike. This error occurs when the die strikes the planchet away from the center and more toward the edge.

Ordinarily, if the die and planchet are aligned, the obverse and reverse designs will be centered and upright. Any slight misalignment will, however, result in the design on both or either side of the coin, being struck away from the center.

The error’s value will depend on the extent of off-ness the design has been struck.
